Focused on helping plant folks fight the root rot battle.

Overview

Sol Soils is a small Minneapolis-based company founded in 2021 by friends & plant aficionados Travis Thein and John Porter. Travis developed a deep interest in cacti during the pademic and quickly realized mainstream soil options retained too much moisture and created hydrophobic, anaerobic environments for potted plants. He spent over 1,000 hours researching, designing, and testing different soil mixes for his own plants while consulting soil scientists and botanists along the way. The goal was to create faster-draining mediums to help indoor plants thrive. Sol Soils was born.

Brands:We offer easier-care chunky/gritty potting mixes for a variety of plant types, harder-to-find amendments, and decorative soil toppers for potted plants.

  Products

  • Sol Soils - Houseplant Chunky Mix
Our potting mixes make plant care easier regardless of how green your thumb is. They are specifically formulated to help prevent root rot, pests like fungus gnats, and minimize environmental impact....

  • Sol Soils offers a variety of high-quality, gritty mix soils, soil amendments, and decorative soil toppers designed for the full spectrum of potted plants that may be in your collection. We select and hand-mix the best ingredients to produce fast draining soils that help protect against root rot, the number one killer of indoor plants.

Houseplant Chunky Mix contains the most organic matter of all our mixes to ensure that your houseplants get all the moisture and nutrients they need to thrive. This mix utilizes recycled coconut chips and coir, an otherwise wasted byproduct of the coconut industry. Of the 50 million coconuts produced around the world each year, about 85% of the husks are discarded as trash. As a soil component, the ground husks offer excellent aeration and moisture retention properties while still providing a fast-draining medium to reduce the risk of soggy soil and root-rot for indoor potted plants.

*Perfect for Jungle Plants or Aroids like Anthurium, Alocasia, Dieffenbachia, Monstera, Philodendron, ZZ plants, as well as Calatheas, Dracaena Dragon Trees, Hoyas, Palms, Pothos, Sansevieria Snake Plants, etc. Also recommended for the ever-popular winter indoor plant, the Christmas Cactus -i.e.- Schlumbergera species. This cactus and many Aroids listed above are epiphytic, which means they can be found growing up the side or in the branches and crevices of trees in rainforests as opposed to in the ground.

    Soil Composition

Organic: coconut husks, pine bark, compost

Inorganic: pumice, calcined clay, perlite, expanded clay

At Sol Soils, we are passionate about the beauty of plants and the natural world. But passion doesn't change the world without action. Through our partnership with global non-profit One Tree Planted, we donate a portion of every bag sold to plant a tree in the world's most deforested areas. With each purchase of a Sol Soils product, you are directly contributing to the restoration of our planet's most beautiful and important ecosystems.
